MMDC Launches “State of the Working Student” to Elevate Voices of Filipino Working Learners

Mapúa Malayan Digital College (MMDC) has officially launched the State of the Working Student (SWS) initiative — a nationwide effort to better understand and document the lived experiences of Filipino working students.

The initiative forms part of MMDC’s broader Step Up sa Pangarap campaign and its support for the celebration of National Working Students Day, reinforcing the College’s commitment to recognizing and supporting learners who balance work and education.

Listening to the Realities of Working Students

Across the Philippines, thousands of students pursue higher education while maintaining employment. Many navigate long work hours, academic deadlines, financial responsibilities, and family commitments — often simultaneously.

Despite their growing presence in the education and workforce landscape, their experiences are not often the focus of conversations. While some data exists on students and employment, the lived realities of working students - their schedules, pressures, motivations, and support systems -- are rarely documented in a comprehensive way. 

The State of the Working Student initiative seeks to address this gap by gathering nationwide insights through an online survey that explores:
• Academic access and flexibility
• Work conditions and schedules
• Financial realities
• Digital access and study resources
• Well-being and burnout
• Support systems
• Skills development and career readiness
• Identity, motivation, and future aspirations

The findings will be consolidated into the State of the Working Student Report, which MMDC plans to publish and share publicly with schools, employers, policymakers, and key stakeholders.

Recognizing and Celebrating Working Students

In line with the observance of National Working Students Day every March 21, the initiative also seeks to recognize and celebrate the perseverance of working students. By sharing their realities and stories, the effort highlights both the challenges they navigate and the achievements they earn along the way — helping working students see that their journeys matter and that they are part of a larger community striving toward similar dreams.

A Foundational Study and Ongoing Commitment

This initial survey represents the first phase of what MMDC envisions as a continuing national effort. The College intends to update the study regularly to track trends and evolving realities among working learners.

While outcomes depend on collaboration across institutions and sectors, the long-term intention of the initiative is to contribute to:
• Improved policies and support systems
• More understanding and inclusive workplaces
• Data-informed programs and partnerships
• Stronger advocacy for working students
• Greater representation of working students in national conversations

“This initiative is about listening first,” Rita De Jesus, MMDC's Director for Student Affairs shared. “Before we can improve systems, we need to understand the full picture of what working students are experiencing today.”

Invitation to Participate

MMDC invites all working students across the Philippines, even Filipinos working and studying abroad, to participate in the survey.

By sharing their experiences, respondents contribute to a broader effort to ensure that working students’ voices are recognized and included in conversations that shape education and employment systems.

As a token of appreciation:
• Each completed response and each successful referral corresponds to one (1) raffle entry
• Ten (10) respondents will receive ₱500 worth of Gift Certificates
• Winners will be announced on March 21 - National Working Students Day

Participation is voluntary, and all responses will be handled in accordance with the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10173). Data will be analyzed and reported only in aggregated form.
